There are Varying Degrees of severity of symptoms, which is why as educators we use the term FASD. Some children may possess all symptoms whiles others carry only a few. Many children show no physical characteristics, but posses most of the behavior and cognitive making it difficult to asses their severity.
Physical Characteristics
- low birth weight
- facial abnormalities, including smaller eye openings, flattened
between the nose and the upper lip)
- small head circumference
- organ dysfunction
- Epilepsy

Cognitive and Behavioral Characteristics
- failure to thrive
- developmental delay
- poor coordination/fine motor skills
- poor socialization skills, such as difficulty building and maintaining friendships and relating to groups
- lack of imagination or curiosity
- learning difficulties, including poor memory, inability to understand concepts such as time and money, poor language comprehension, poor problem-solving skills
- behavioural problems, including hyperactivity, inability to concentrate, social withdrawal, stubbornness, impulsiveness, and anxiety
